It was manufactured by the Nibelungenwerkeworks and armed with the famous 88 KwK L/71 which was themost powerful gun of the time. Intended to take part to opera-tion “Zitadelle”, aimed at eliminating the Kursk salient, 89 Fer-dinand tank hunters will be delivered to Panzerjäger-Régiment656, itself composed of 2 battalions:•45 allocated to Panzerjäger-Abteilung 653.•44 allocated to Panzerjäger-Abteilung 654.Designed to engage armoured vehicles at a long range, the Ferdinand showed rapidly its limits during the Kursk battle. It was plagued with breakdowns due to insufficient time to solveits technical issue as it was rushed into service. It also sufferedfrom too fragile an undercarriage to withstand its whopping 65metric tons as well as the lack of close defence weapon to faceattacks from soviet panzerknackers.Despite these flaws the kill ratio of Panzerjäger-Régiment656 was impressive some sources state that it would have des-troyed close to 500 enemy tanks fortheloss of 39 Ferdinands. These losses were mostly caused by the absence of appro-priate wreckers. The crews had then to abandon and destroytheir mounts. The 50 remaining machines will be regroupedinto Panzerjäger-Abteilung 653 and will carry on fighting on theEastern front where it will lose 4 more tank hunters. At the end of 1943, the remaining Ferdinands will be trans-ferred to Austria where they will be overhauled based on thereturn of experience of their early frontline career. They will geta new name in the process: Elefant. They will be used on the Italian front and again on theEastern front. A small number of Elefants will take part to thedefence of Berlin in 1945 as part of the Schwere Heeres Pan-zerjäger-Kompanie 614.Fournitures used for this kit :Model:Dragon ref 6133Tracks:Friul ref ATL 62Transfers:Archer ref 35176PE :Aber ref 35122Mudguards : Aber ref 35124Gun barrel : Aber ref 35L14↘TheModelThe Dragon kit is really accurate and the moulding is sharp.Very few improvements are required in order to obtain a very ac-curate replica and mainly consist in thinning or replacing partsthat are not true to scale because of the limitations of the injec-tion process.Ichose to represent a vehicle from 2. Kompanie / Panzer-jäger-Abteilung 653 at Kursk that bore a camouflage composedof irregular green spots on a dark yellow base. The Ferdinandswere delivered to frontline units painted in dark yellow and thecamo was applied in the units. It seems that there was no stan-dard camouflage pattern for these vehicles although we can seesimilar patterns on vehicles belonging to the same Abetilung.5WARNg01PAINTS MAG' [ Pobierz całość w formacie PDF ]
